Padar Island Trekking Tips: Hike Smart, Stay Safe, and Enjoy Every Step!

If you’re visiting Komodo National Park, there’s one place you absolutely can’t miss—Padar Island. Famous for its jaw-dropping panoramic views and iconic rolling hills, Padar is one of the most photographed destinations in Indonesia. But don’t let those stunning Instagram photos fool you—the trail can be steep, rocky, and slippery, especially under the tropical sun.

The good news? With a little preparation, your hike can be safe, fun, and totally worth it. Here are Suka Scuba’s top tips to help you conquer Padar like a pro.

☀️ 1. Start Early to Beat the Heat

Padar gets very hot during the day, especially between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. The best time to hike is early in the morning, when the weather is cooler, the lighting is perfect for photos, and the trail is much more comfortable.

Bonus: You’ll also avoid the biggest crowds!

👟 2. Wear Proper Hiking Shoes

Forget flip-flops or sandals.

The trail is made up of loose gravel, rocks, and uneven steps that can become slippery. A pair of comfortable hiking shoes or sports shoes with good grip will help prevent slips and ankle injuries.

Your feet will definitely thank you.

💧 3. Bring Plenty of Water

It might be a short hike, but the tropical heat can quickly lead to dehydration.

Carry at least 500 ml to 1 liter of water per person and take small sips throughout the climb.

Stay hydrated, stay energized!

🧢 4. Protect Yourself from the Sun

There’s very little shade on Padar Island.

Don’t forget:

  • 🧴 Sunscreen
  • 🕶️ Sunglasses
  • 🧢 A hat or cap
  • 👕 Lightweight, breathable clothing

Protecting yourself from the sun means you’ll enjoy the hike much more.

🚶 5. Take It Slow—There’s No Prize for Finishing First

The view isn’t going anywhere.

Walk at your own pace, take breaks when needed, and enjoy the incredible scenery along the way.

Remember: the goal is to reach the top safely, not as quickly as possible.

📵 6. Watch Your Step (Not Just Your Camera)

Everyone wants the perfect photo—but safety comes first.

Avoid walking while looking at your phone, and never stand too close to cliff edges for selfies.

The best photos are the ones you get home with safely.

🎒 7. Pack Light

A heavy backpack makes the climb harder than it needs to be.

Bring only the essentials:

  • Water
  • Sunscreen
  • Camera or phone
  • Small towel
  • Snacks

Travel light and hike comfortably.

🌿 8. Respect Nature

Padar Island is part of the protected Komodo National Park.

Help preserve its beauty by:

  • Taking your trash back with you
  • Staying on designated trails
  • Avoiding damage to plants and wildlife

Leave nothing behind except your footprints.
